Choosing and Using Self-Feeding Utensils

Watching your toddler show interest in self-feeding is a major milestone. When they start reaching for your spoon, it’s the perfect time to introduce their own. When choosing a set, look for ergonomic designs—shorter, thicker handles are much easier for little hands to grip than standard long-handled spoons. Silicone sets are often a favorite because they are gentle on emerging teeth and gums and provide a good grip.

At this age, the goal isn't just about what ends up in their stomach, but the development of fine motor skills. Don't worry about the mess! You can help them along by "pre-loading" the spoon with food and placing it in their hand, allowing them to complete the motion of bringing it to their mouth. Choosing utensils specifically designed for toddlers, like those often recommended by pediatric nutritionists or BLW coaches, can make the transition much smoother. Be patient and keep the environment relaxed, and soon you'll see your little one confidently feeding themselves.
