Cradle cap, or infantile seborrheic dermatitis, is a common and harmless condition that causes crusty or oily scaly patches on a baby's scalp. While it usually resolves on its own, it can be frustrating when it seems to linger despite standard care.
If you've noticed that standard baby shampoos aren't doing the trick, you might consider a gentle, manual-assisted approach. Many parents swear by applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly or a baby-safe oil to the affected area about an hour before bath time. This helps to soften the stubborn flakes. During the bath, use a soft baby brush or a gentle washcloth to lightly loosen the scales while shampooing.

Consistency is key, but be careful not to scrub too hard, as this can irritate the underlying skin. If the condition becomes red, inflamed, seems to spread, or if you are considering medicated shampoos, always check with your pediatrician first to ensure the treatment is appropriate for your baby's age and skin type.
