It’s every parent’s worry: seeing a red, swollen bump on their little one, especially when it’s near sensitive areas like the eyes. Mosquito bites are a common annoyance, but knowing how to handle them calmly can save you a lot of stress.
When the Bite is Near the Eye
If you notice swelling near the eye, it is natural to want to apply a topical cream, but experts generally advise against using creams or ointments in such close proximity to the eye. Instead, opt for a cold compress. Applying a clean, cold, damp cloth to the area can help reduce swelling and provide immediate, soothing relief without the risk of irritation or accidental contact with the eye.
Managing Bites on the Body
For bites on the rest of the body, you may choose to use a gentle, baby-safe anti-itch or turmeric-based cream designed for after-bite care. Always ensure you are using products specifically formulated for infants.

When to See a Doctor
While most mosquito bites are harmless and clear up on their own, keep an eye on the swelling. If you notice any of the following, it is time to consult your pediatrician:
- The swelling increases significantly or spreads.
- The area becomes increasingly hot, painful, or develops a discharge.
- Your baby seems unusually lethargic or develops a fever.
Keep your baby's nails trimmed to prevent them from scratching the site, which can lead to a secondary infection. In most cases, with a little cold relief and some patience, the redness will fade within a day or two.
