Managing Post-Vaccination Recovery

Watching your baby go through their scheduled vaccinations can be a stressful experience, especially when they react with crankiness, sleepiness, or a change in feeding habits. It is quite common for babies to feel 'off' for 48 to 72 hours after their 6-week shots.

If your baby seems unusually fussy or lethargic, don't panic. Many babies will only want to be held in their parents' arms for comfort rather than lying on a flat surface. Regarding feeding, your baby may have a reduced appetite. While it is important to offer feeds regularly, it is common for them to be less interested than usual.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Pain Management: If your baby is clearly in distress or not feeding well, consult your pediatrician about appropriate, weight-based pain relief (like paracetamol/Calpol).
  • Watch for Specific Reactions: Some vaccines, particularly the rotavirus oral vaccine, can occasionally cause minor vomiting or loose stools for a day or two.
  • Monitor Pees/Poops: As long as your baby is staying hydrated and having wet diapers, their body is likely managing the immune response well.

If the lethargy persists beyond three days, or if you notice a high fever or signs of dehydration, always reach out to your pediatrician immediately.
