Postpartum Bleeding: When to See Your Doctor

It is common for postpartum bleeding to be irregular. After your initial post-birth flow, it may reduce to a light spotting, then suddenly reappear, or transition from bright red to brown. If you find your bleeding has stopped and suddenly restarts with a heavy, bright red flow, it is always best to check in with your gynecologist to ensure your recovery is on track. While some mothers see their periods return as early as 6-8 weeks postpartum—even while breastfeeding—others may not see them for months. Monitoring the flow and observing for any unusual discomfort can help you determine if you are experiencing a normal postpartum period or if you need an evaluation.
