Watching your little one struggle with the pain of teething can be heartbreaking. Even before a tooth breaks through the gums, you might notice behavioral changes like extreme fussiness, gum grinding, and general irritability.
When your baby is deep in the throes of teething discomfort, here are a few gentle, effective ways to help them through it:
- Cold Therapy: Cold items are often the go-to for numbing inflamed gums. Offer chilled silicone teethers (always check for signs of wear and tear) or even a clean, chilled washcloth for them to gnaw on.
- Extra Comfort: During teething, babies often seek extra physical closeness. Don’t shy away from increased comfort feeding or extra snuggles. Sometimes, being held is the best way to soothe their nervous system.
- Stay Calm: It sounds simple, but your calm presence is the best antidote to your baby’s distress. If you find yourself becoming overwhelmed, take a quick break to breathe while a partner or caregiver steps in.
A Note on Hygiene: As your baby spends more time chewing on teethers, ensure you are cleaning them thoroughly. While you want to keep items sanitary, remember that once a baby starts exploring the world (and putting everything in their mouth!), complete sterilization becomes difficult. Focus on keeping their immediate play area clean and safe.
If the fussiness seems excessive or is accompanied by other symptoms like high fever, always consult your pediatrician to rule out other issues.
