Tips for Baby's Nasal Congestion

A congested nose can be incredibly frustrating for both you and your little one, especially when it disrupts sleep. While saline drops are a common first line of defense, they aren't always enough to clear a stubborn blockage.

What to Try at Home

  • Steam Therapy: A steamy bathroom can help loosen nasal passages. Sit in the bathroom with your baby for 10–15 minutes with the shower running (ensure the steam is warm, not hot, to prevent burns).
  • Hydration: Keep your little one hydrated. If they are over 6 months old, offering small, frequent sips of water or diluted, non-concentrated herbal teas (like Tulsi-infused water) may provide comfort, though always check with your pediatrician before introducing new liquids.
  • Elevation: Sometimes, keeping the baby slightly elevated (using a safe, firm wedge or by holding them upright) can help them breathe more easily while they rest.

A Word of Caution

While you may hear advice about using camphor or other strong aromatic substances to aid breathing, please exercise extreme caution. Camphor and certain essential oils can be toxic or cause respiratory distress in infants. Always prioritize safe, non-invasive methods and avoid using strong scents near your baby's sleeping area without medical guidance.

When to See a Doctor: If your baby is struggling to breathe, has a high fever, is unusually lethargic, or if the congestion lasts for more than a few days, please consult your pediatrician immediately. They can recommend safe, age-appropriate decongestants or assess if there is an infection that requires treatment.
