Tips for Successful Baby-Wearing

Baby-wearing is a wonderful way to keep your little one close while keeping your hands free, but it isn’t always love at first sight. If your baby protests when placed in a carrier, you are not alone! It is common for babies to need time to adjust to the sensation of being contained.

Tips for Success

  • Start Small: Don't expect your baby to stay in the carrier for hours immediately. Start with 5–10 minute sessions to help them get comfortable.
  • Movement is Key: Babies are often soothed by motion. Try putting the carrier on and immediately heading for a walk, or rhythmically swaying and rocking while you get them settled.
  • Go Outside: A change of scenery can distract a fussy baby and make the transition into the carrier much easier.
  • Check the Fit: Ensure you are using the carrier correctly according to the manufacturer's guidelines. For newborns, ensure the carrier supports proper hip positioning and that the airway is always clear.

Every baby has a different temperament, and some days may be better than others. If your baby has a "no carrier" day, don't force it—try again tomorrow when they are well-rested and fed. With consistency, many parents find that their baby eventually learns to love the carrier as a cozy, safe space.
