It’s common for babies to experience occasional constipation or loose stools as their digestive systems adapt to new textures and ingredients. When your little one is feeling uncomfortable, keeping them calm and hydrated is your first line of defense.
Managing Constipation
If it has been a few days since your baby has had a bowel movement, focus on gentle physical movement and hydration:
- Gentle Movement: Bicycle kicks and the "ILU" massage (a specific abdominal massage technique) can help move gas and stool through the digestive tract.
- Hydration: Ensure they are getting plenty of fluids through their usual milk feeds and small sips of water.
- Fiber-Rich Foods: If your pediatrician has given the green light for these foods, items like stewed prunes, papaya, or sprouted ragi can act as gentle, natural aids for digestion.

Soothing Loose Stools
If your baby has an upset tummy or loose motions, aim for bland, binding foods that are easy to digest:
- The "BRAT" Style Approach: Foods like stewed apples (peeled and cooked), rice kanji (a thin rice porridge), and moong dal khichdi are traditional, gentle options that help soothe the gut.
- Hydration is Key: Loose stools can lead to dehydration quickly. Continue regular milk feeds and offer sips of water. If you notice signs of dehydration or if the loose motions are frequent, consult your pediatrician immediately—they may suggest an electrolyte solution like ORS to keep your baby hydrated.
Disclaimer: Always consult your pediatrician before introducing new remedies or if you are concerned about your baby’s bowel habits, especially if you notice signs of severe discomfort, lethargy, or dehydration.
