How can I help my toddler stop hitting when they get upset?

It is common for toddlers to hit when they lack the vocabulary to express big emotions. Stay calm and consistent, as your reaction teaches them how to handle stress. Gently reinforce that "hands are not for hitting" and offer healthy alternatives, such as giving a high-five, waving, or punching a pillow to release physical frustration. Understanding the "HALT" method (Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired) can also help you identify the root cause of the tantrum and address the need before hitting occurs.
