How do I handle the 'tongue thrust' reflex when starting solids?

The tongue thrust reflex is a natural mechanism where a baby pushes objects out of their mouth with their tongue, typically fading between 4 and 6 months of age. If your baby pushes everything out, they may not be developmentally ready for solids yet. Ensure they have achieved all signs of readiness, such as sitting with minimal support and holding their head upright, before proceeding. If they are ready but struggling with textures, try offering thicker, hand-mashed foods rather than thin purees, which are easier for them to manage and swallow.
