How should I handle my toddler’s frequent outbursts when they are struggling with independence?

Toddlers often experience frustration when their desire for independence clashes with their current physical capabilities, such as struggling to button clothes or operate a lotion pump. While acknowledging their "big emotions" is important, you can also offer "assisted independence" by letting them start the task before you step in to finish it, or offering a choice between two acceptable options. For tasks that are truly too difficult, try validating their desire to do it themselves while calmly setting a boundary or offering a specific, manageable way they can help. Remember that these outbursts are a normal part of development as they test their autonomy, and it is okay to give yourself grace during these high-emotion moments.
