How should I handle stored breast milk that has separated?

It is completely normal for the fat and water content in stored breast milk to separate, with a layer of cream rising to the top. This does not mean the milk has spoiled; simply give the container a gentle shake to remix the components before feeding. As long as the milk has been stored properly and smells and tastes normal, it is perfectly safe for your baby.
