Is it normal for a baby in the NICU to be temporarily switched to formula?

Yes, it can happen that a medical team suggests a temporary switch to specialized formula if a premature or NICU infant is struggling to digest breast milk or having issues with weight gain or infections. This does not mean you have to stop your breastfeeding journey; focus on regular pumping to maintain your supply while your baby gains strength on the formula. Many infants successfully transition back to a combination of breast milk and formula, or exclusively breast milk, once their digestive system has matured and they are more stable.
