When is it appropriate to start putting shoes on a baby?

Shoes are not required for babies until they begin walking outdoors. Before that, shoes can actually hinder the natural development of the foot and the muscle strength required for walking. Once your child begins taking their first steps outside, opt for lightweight, flexible-soled shoes that allow for natural movement, keeping them barefoot or in socks whenever they are indoors or in safe, clean environments.
