Hand dominance - what age does it appear?

21mo and switches hands constantly. Pencil in right, spoon in left, then swap. When does dominance emerge?

Watch for what hand they reach with first when distracted - that's often the dominant one emerging.

Usually 2-4 years. Some kids not until 5-6. Forcing dominance can actually cause issues.

Mine settled into right hand around 3.5. Was using both equally until then.

Bilateral skills at this age are GOOD. Means both sides of brain developing.
