When to start solids - paediatrician vs midwife conflict
gentle-goldfinch · 5/8/2026
Paediatrician at 16wk check said start at 4 months. Midwife and HV say wait until 6 months. Both very insistent. Baby is showing signs (sitting with support, interested in food, lost tongue thrust). What did you do?

NHS guidance is 6 months. The 4-month rec is older/American. We waited til 6mo and started BLW.
Tongue thrust gone is the key one IMO. We started purees at 5mo and never had an issue.
Allergy intro guidance has shifted - earlier intro (from 4mo) for high-risk babies is now recommended for things like peanut. Worth asking specifically.
Signs matter more than the calendar. We started at 5.5mo when ours could sit unsupported.
Six months for us. The gut isn't fully ready before that according to current guidance.
