It is common for parents to feel a sense of worry when a baby who was previously hitting milestones—like rolling over—suddenly seems to stop. Around the 3.5 to 4-month mark, many babies shift their focus. You might notice your little one is suddenly obsessed with their fists, drooling more, or becoming easily distracted by their environment rather than showing interest in toys or movement.
Rest assured, this is a completely normal phase. During this time, your baby is undergoing significant neurological development. Their eyesight is sharpening, allowing them to track movement (like ceiling fans!) and recognize familiar faces. The urge to suckle on their fists is actually a positive sign of developing motor control—they are learning how to bring their hands to their mouth, which is a major milestone.

If you find your baby has hit a 'lull' in rolling, try not to over-analyze it. Keep offering plenty of supervised tummy time on a flat surface, but don’t be surprised if they prefer to just hang out and chew on their fingers for a while. Their drive to explore will naturally return as they become more curious about objects and start reaching out. As always, if you have concerns about your child’s development, consult your pediatrician to ensure they are on track.
