If your 5-to-18-month-old treats every diaper or clothing change like a wrestling match, you aren't alone! As babies become more mobile, the simple task of getting them dressed can feel like an impossible feat.
Parents have found that the key to a successful change is distraction and engagement. When the "alligator" rolling begins, try these strategies to keep your little one occupied:

- The 'Special' Drawer: Keep a basket of safe, interesting items near the changing station that are only available during diaper changes. This could include a rattle, a clean toothbrush, a plastic container with a screw-top lid, or even a soft silicone teether.
- Sing and Engage: Use the time to sing specific songs or play peek-a-boo. A musical toy that plays when placed near their feet can also capture their attention long enough for a quick pant-change.
- The 'Distraction' Object: If they are prone to grabbing at your clothes, try offering a safe household object like a spoon or a soft cloth for them to hold.
- Keep it Brief: When they are in a particularly wiggly phase, aim for efficiency. Sometimes, standing changes (where possible) are much easier to navigate than forcing a baby to lie flat on their back when they just want to move.
This phase is developmental—your baby is learning to navigate their world and isn't a fan of being stationary. While it can be exhausting, know that it is temporary. Stay patient, stay creative with your distractions, and try to keep the mood light!
