Nipple Confusion and Bottle Feeding Tips

If you are concerned about nipple confusion, the approach to bottle feeding is just as important as the equipment. To help your baby navigate both breast and bottle, consider using a "paced bottle feeding" technique, which mimics the flow and effort required at the breast. This prevents your baby from developing a flow preference for the faster-moving milk from a bottle.

Ensure your caregiver is also trained in paced feeding, as inconsistencies in how the baby is fed can lead to frustration. If you notice your baby acting fussy at the breast after a bottle feed, try sizing down the nipple to the slowest flow available (e.g., preemie flow) to encourage them to work for their milk. Always consult a lactation professional if issues persist, and remember that for older infants, transitioning directly to a straw or open cup can be an excellent way to bypass bottle-related confusion entirely.
