Once those first adorable teeth start peeking through, it’s time to start thinking about your baby’s oral hygiene routine. Establishing a habit early helps set the stage for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
For babies around 10–12 months old, you don't necessarily need a full-blown toothbrush immediately. Many parents find success using a soft finger brush, which fits snugly over your finger and allows you to gently massage their gums and clean their new teeth. Some also prefer specially designed ultra-soft baby toothbrushes.

When it comes to toothpaste, pediatric dentists generally suggest waiting until after your baby turns 12 months old to introduce it, unless otherwise advised by your healthcare provider. Before that, cleaning the teeth with plain water or a small amount of an infant-safe, fluoride-free toothpaste (if cleared by your pediatrician) is often enough.
When you do start using a toothbrush, choose one with a small head and soft bristles to protect their delicate gums. Make it a fun, routine part of their day—perhaps after bath time or before bed—to help them get used to the sensation. Remember, every baby is different, so if you have questions about specific products or technique, your pediatrician or a pediatric dentist can provide the best guidance for your child's specific needs.
