Introducing solids is an exciting milestone! As you prepare to move beyond breastmilk or formula, here is how to navigate those first few weeks successfully.
How many meals to start with?
While some experts may suggest two meals a day, many parents find it more manageable to start with just one meal per day for the first week or two. This allows your baby’s digestive system to adjust and helps you observe how they react to new foods. Once they are comfortable, you can gradually introduce a second meal, typically moving from a morning "breakfast" to an afternoon fruit snack.

Managing the transition:
- Expect changes in stool: It is completely normal for your baby's poop to change in frequency, color, and consistency when you introduce solids. You may see a significant increase in the number of daily bowel movements. Keep an eye on it, but don't be alarmed by the variety in texture!
- The 'Teething' factor: Many babies start solids and teething around the same time. If your baby is fussy or experiencing loose stools, it might be the teething process or a reaction to a new food. If it persists, consult your pediatrician.
- Water and cups: As you increase solid food, you can begin offering small amounts of water in an open cup or a sippy cup. Don't be discouraged if they don't take to it immediately; it takes practice for them to learn how to sip.
Note: Always consult your pediatrician for a personalized feeding plan before beginning solids.
