It is never too early to start caring for your baby’s oral hygiene. Many pediatricians recommend starting a simple cleaning routine as soon as the very first tooth sprouts. Here is how to keep those tiny pearly whites healthy.
Your Daily Routine
For babies and toddlers, a consistent routine is key. Aim for twice a day—once in the morning and once before bedtime.
- Tools: Use a soft-bristled baby toothbrush or a finger brush. Many parents find specialized brands like Chicco helpful, as they are designed for small mouths.
- Toothpaste: Start with a tiny, rice-grain-sized amount of fluoride-free baby toothpaste.
- Technique: Gently brush all surfaces of the emerging teeth. If your baby is still quite young, a wet, clean finger brush is a great, gentle way to start the habit.

Managing Staining and Supplements
Many parents notice tooth staining when administering liquid iron supplements (such as Tonoferon or Ferium). If you notice this:
- Dilution: Check with your pediatrician if you can dilute the iron dose with water.
- Administration: Try using a dropper to direct the medicine toward the inner cheek rather than the front teeth.
- Post-Dose Care: Offer a few sips of water or a small piece of orange/citrus fruit (if appropriate for their age) immediately after the dose to help cleanse the palate and teeth.
- Consistency: Brushing immediately after the dose can also help prevent lingering residue from staining the enamel.
Note: Always consult your pediatrician regarding iron dosage and specific oral hygiene concerns.
