It is completely normal for a baby to need support while sitting as they approach six months of age. If your baby is falling to the side or leaning back, their core muscles are still developing. You can encourage their progress by offering plenty of supervised floor time on various surfaces. While padded playmats are great for comfort, spending time on a firmer surface can help them learn to balance more effectively.
If you are worried about starting solids, please consult your pediatrician for an assessment of your baby's readiness. If they need to begin eating before they can sit independently, you can use padding to provide extra support in their high chair. Most importantly, keep the experience low-pressure. Every baby develops at their own pace, and providing a safe, open space to explore their physical limits is the best way to help them reach this milestone.
