Watching your baby discover their hands is a magical milestone. Around 3 to 6 months, you’ll notice your baby shifting from reflexive movements to intentional reaching and grabbing. Here is how you can support their developing coordination:
Toys for Tiny Hands
- The O-Ball: These are highly recommended for early grasp development. Their thin, pliable, and lightweight design makes it easy for little fingers to hook onto them.
- Rings and Teethers: Simple, lightweight objects are easier to manipulate than heavy or rigid toys.
- Play Gyms: Dangly toys are a classic for a reason. If you choose a wooden play gym, look for one that feels sturdy. Many parents find that having a dedicated mat attached makes the gym more stable and easier to move around. If your gym doesn’t have a mat, placing it on a firm, comfortable play mat can help keep it in place during playtime.

Encouraging Movement
- Tummy Time Mats: As your baby moves toward crawling, a thick, firm play mat (aim for at least 10mm thickness) is ideal. A mat that is too thin can bunch up, making it harder for baby to move, whereas a sturdy, waterproof mat provides the perfect base for them to push up and eventually crawl.
A Note on Milestones Every baby develops at their own pace. Don't worry if your little one is currently more interested in batting at toys than holding them. Provide a variety of textures and shapes, and let them explore safely on their own terms. If you have specific concerns about your baby's grasp or mobility, your pediatrician is always your best resource for guidance.
