If your baby has recently sprouted their first set of teeth, you may have noticed a new, slightly unsettling habit: aggressive teeth grinding. It can be alarming to hear that distinctive sound, but rest assured, this is often a perfectly normal developmental phase.
As infants adjust to the new sensation of having hard surfaces in their mouths, they often experiment by chomping or grinding their teeth. It is their way of exploring their own anatomy and managing the sensory input of new incisors. Most babies outgrow this behavior within a few weeks as they become accustomed to their new teeth.

While teething can cause discomfort, be cautious about using over-the-counter numbing gels. Pediatricians often advise against certain topical anesthetics found in domestic products. If your baby is visibly distressed, consult your pediatrician for safe, approved methods to soothe their gums. In the meantime, distract your little one with teething toys and monitor the phase—it typically passes quickly once the novelty of their new smile wears off.
