Traveling with a baby who is just starting solids can feel daunting, but with a little preparation, you can enjoy your trip without stress. Whether you are flying or driving, here is how to keep your little one fed and happy.
Pack Smart with Premixes
Homemade premixes are a lifesaver. Items like roasted poha, upma, or khichdi mixes are lightweight and easy to store.
- Cooking on the road: In many cases, you can simply add boiling water to your premix and cover for a few minutes to create a quick, warm meal.
- Hotel Requests: Don’t hesitate to ask hotel staff for help. Many are happy to provide fresh idlis, plain khichdi, or steamed veggies. Some hotels may even allow you to pack a little extra from the breakfast buffet for later in the day.
Easy-to-Carry Snacks
When you are out sightseeing, access to a kitchen isn't always possible. Pack dry, shelf-stable snacks that are easy for little hands to hold:
- Roasted makhana
- Banana chips
- Kid-friendly crackers or puffs
- Whole fruits like bananas and pears

Managing Meals
- Maintain the Routine: Try to keep your meal timings consistent even while traveling.
- Eat Together: Use your travel time as an opportunity to let your baby join in on the fun. If you are eating at a restaurant, ask for a high chair and let them be a part of the table conversation.
- Avoid the Pressure: If your baby refuses a meal or wants extra milk, don’t worry. A few days of "travel-friendly" eating won't disrupt their overall progress.
A Note on Food Safety
Always carry a small dabba for leftovers and keep cleaning wipes handy for messy hands and faces. If your baby is under one, continue to be mindful of salt and sugar even when eating out. Most importantly, stay flexible—if you need to rely on breast milk or formula as a backup, that is perfectly okay!
