Tummy time is essential for building the neck, shoulder, and core strength needed for rolling, crawling, and sitting. However, it’s also a common source of frustration for many parents because babies often protest at first.
Don't Panic About the Crying
It is completely normal for a baby under 3 months to dislike tummy time. If your baby cries, you don’t have to force them to stay on the floor for long, agonizing stretches.

Ways to Make It Enjoyable
- Change the Position: Tummy time doesn’t have to happen on a flat rug. Try placing the baby on your chest while you are reclined, or laying them across your lap. Being face-to-face with you provides comfort and makes the effort feel like play.
- Use Props: A feeding pillow can provide extra support, making it easier for the baby to lift their head.
- Engage the Senses: Use high-contrast black-and-white cards, safe mirrors, or colorful books to keep their attention focused on something other than the effort of holding their head up.
- Follow Their Lead: Many babies will begin to enjoy tummy time more as their muscles strengthen. Some babies even eventually roll onto their tummies on their own because they prefer that position.
A Note on Milestones: If you are worried about your baby's development, remember that babies follow their own timelines. If your baby has reflux or dislikes the floor, focus on upright play or chest-to-chest time until they build more confidence. Always consult your pediatrician if you have specific concerns about your baby's motor skills or physical development.
