How can I stop my toddler from throwing food during mealtimes?

It is common for toddlers to experiment with food throwing, but you can set firm boundaries by offering one or two verbal warnings, such as "we don't throw food on the floor." If the behavior continues, calmly remove the plate and end the meal, as this helps them associate throwing with the loss of the eating opportunity. Many parents find success by allowing their child to eat in a different way, such as using a Montessori-style floor table, or by providing an empty "landing zone" bowl where the child can place food they no longer want instead of tossing it. Most children grow out of this phase shortly after turning one, especially as their communication skills improve and they gain more agency over their meals.
