My newborn is crying at the breast and seems fussy. Could my supply have dropped or is something else happening?
Fussiness at the breast can be confusing, but it doesn't always signal a low milk supply. At this age, babies often go through phases of distracted feeding or overtiredness; an overtired baby may find the effort required to nurse at the breast difficult and may prefer a bottle, which allows for easier milk flow. To help, try feeding in a calm environment, or practice 'dream feeding' by offering the breast while the baby is drowsy or just waking up. If the baby continues to be inconsolable, having another caregiver attempt to soothe them for a short nap can sometimes break the cycle of overtiredness, allowing them to return to the breast ready to feed properly.
