What are the common causes of a baby gagging or coughing mid-feed?

Gagging or coughing during a feed is often a reaction to a fast milk letdown or the baby taking in excess air during a latch. To manage this, try expressing a small amount of milk before feeding or using a side-lying or reclined position, which uses gravity to slow the flow. Burping your baby mid-feed and ensuring they have a deep, secure latch can also significantly reduce the intake of air and prevent the feed from becoming overwhelming for them.
