How can I manage excessive crying or potential colic in a newborn?

Incessant, high-pitched crying is common in the first few weeks as a baby's digestive system matures. Try soothing techniques like gas-release massages, 'bicycle' leg exercises, or holding the baby in a position that puts gentle pressure on their abdomen. If these fail, consider checking if the baby is adequately fed, as long feeds with an immature suck may leave them exhausted but still hungry; occasionally, a top-up feed can help settle a baby who is struggling with supply issues.
